Basic Survey on Study in Japan III - Topics: General Trend 6. The desire to pursue higher education is getting weaker.

General Trend
The Desire to Pursue Higher Education is Getting Weaker

There is a horizontal trend in the rate of those who wish to enter a "four-year college + graduate school", and an increase in those who wish to enter "technical schools."

Q What is the highest level of education that you wish to receive in the future?

Desired Educational Level

School Deviation Value x Desired Educational Level
(Senior High School Students)
(%)

When asked about their desired educational level, those who replied "4-year college + graduate school" showed a horizontal trend for all elementary, junior and senior high school students alike. The rate of those who answered " 2-year college" is decreasing, while those who answered " technical school" is on the rise. (See the sequential line graph.) This trend, in the case of senior high school students, is not noticeable among students in schools of high School Deviation Value, as this trend comes from schools of lower School Deviation Value. (See the latter figure.)
