As kids embrace new technologies they acquire the ability to fundamentally change their relationship with media. Those of us who grew up in the 50's and 60's, the "baby-boomers," know what it is to be a media consumer. Three networks. In most countries, only one. On or off. Take it or leave it. In the 1970's and 80's, the 'Generation-Xers' gained the power of the remote control, the right to choose. They were zapping TV channels and VCRs, picking videos and choosing cartridges for their game consoles. In addition to these earlier options, of consuming and choosing, today's kids are also empowered to create their own media. Consume + Choose + Create: this represents a dramatic increase in control that kids have over their own media experiences, a change which has enormous implications. They have new attitudes and many new behaviors, and completely new expectations! |
