The Brain and Education

Japanese Chinese

The International Mind, Brain and Education Society (IMBES), headed by Professor Kurt W. Fischer, Editor of MBE and Director of the Mind, Brain, and Education Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, was established in 2007. Dr. Hideaki Koizumi of Advanced Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd., of Japan, is one of the founding board members. The Society held its inaugural conference in Fort Worth, Texas in early November 2007. In the same year, the Society began publishing an official quarterly journal in English entitled "Mind, Brain, and Education" (MBE). As you know, in Japan for the past several years, the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has been promoting an initiative called Brain Science and Education that supports and actively promotes research in a positive manner. Dr. Koizumi has played a key role in JST.

As you know, CRN has long been committed to studies and research on child rearing, child care and education, and we also have a strong interest in research on education from a neuroscience point of view. With this in mind, we have decided to begin a new series called "The Brain and Education" and look forward to a lively exchange of ideas with you on the topics that we will offer.

This series will consist of pieces on selected articles from the MBE that are of timely and topical interest. As complete translation of the articles will not be possible, I will introduce the content along with my own commentary. By profession, I am a pediatrician, not a neuroscientist. As such, my knowledge of neurology, mainly grounded in my medical education and experience in pediatric practice, is hardly specialized, but we believe that a summary with comments in the language of a non-specialist would better meet the needs of those who access CRN. We hope that this series will provide a forum for communication.

Dr. Noboru Kobayashi, Director, Child Research Net, and Dr. Hirotaka Kataoka, Researcher, Benesse Educational Research and Development Center, Benesse Corporation, review articles from Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE), introducing the integration of neuroscience and education. MBE is published by the International Mind, Brain and Education Society (IMBES) and Blackwell Publishing and edited by a board of internationally recognized scholars and practitioners in fields relevant to the mind, brain and education.
