EXPERIENCE

Dr. Brett V. Brown is a sociologist with extensive experience in the field of indicators of child well-being. He is the project director for a comprehensive report featuring trends in over 80 indicators of well-being titled Trends in the Well-being of America's Children and Youth, released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He is currently directing the production of the third edition of that report, which is due out in the Spring of 1998. In addition, he is a consultant to the U.S. Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, and assisted in the production of its first report titled America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being. This is a report to the President, which will be produced on an annual basis.

Dr. Brown has also done substantial work on state-level indicators of child well-being. He recently co-authored a comprehensive guide titled "A Guide to State and Local-Level Indicators of Child Well-being Available Through the Federal Statistical System" with funding from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. For the last several years Dr. Brown has been a consultant to each of the 50 state Kids Count organizations. In addition, he is directing the assembly of a database containing state-level estimates of child well-being for a major evaluation project titled "Assessing the New Federalism," also funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

For several years Dr. Brown has been working with an international group of scholars to identify and develop indicators of child well-being which are comparable across advanced industrialized countries. It is called Monitoring and Measuring Children's Well Being: The International Project. For the past year Dr. Brown has served as coordinator for the Census and Surveys working group, and has written several papers for the project.

Dr. Brown's other areas of professional interest include research on the transition to adulthood among at-risk youth, the effects of family functioning (and dysfunction) on child well-being, and single-father families. He has researched and written several reports on the topic of disconnected youth for the American Enterprise Institute, and led a major analysis of pathways to adult achievement among at-risk youth, funded by the Ford and Grant Foundations. He directed the development of family functioning measures an evaluation of the PEW Charitable Trusts' Children's Initiative project, and has done original research relating family functioning measures to adolescent behavior problems.
