Dear Friends,
Here's wishing you a Happy New Year from Child Research Net (CRN), the cyber-network dedicated to research on Child Science. As we reflect on 2007 and look forward to 2008, CRN will enter its thirteenth year. First, let me express my sincere gratitude for all your support over the past year and ask for your continued backing in the new year.
For CRN, 2007 has truly been a year of change and growth. On February 3, we hosted an international symposium to commemorate the tenth anniversary of CRN's founding. Oe Kenzaburo, Nobel laureate in literature, delivered the special lecture and we were honored to hear of his interest in and hopes for Child Science. Dr. Wei Yu, Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave the keynote address, which was followed by an afternoon panel discussion of researchers from China, South Korea, and Japan who engaged in stimulating and productive exchange on "The Declining Birthrate as a Social Phenomenon Affecting Children: Research in Japan, China, and South Korea."
We are also pleased to note that CRN has seen a remarkable increase in access: our Japanese site reached 500,000 hits monthly, the English site now receives about 150,000 hits, and the Chinese-language site, about 50,000. CRN now finds itself at new juncture. With the rapid proliferation of the Internet in recent years, users' methods have diversified, and this growth now is challenging us to develop new ways of communication and content.
In addition to being a site for virtual communication, CRN also set up a real site of operations this year: The Child Science Research Program in East Asia. Following the opening ceremony at East China Normal University in Shanghai on November 12, the first Japan-China conference on Child Science was held at Changsha Normal College in China, a school with a well-established reputation and tradition founded by Xu Te-li, Mao Zedong's mentor as a child. The four lecturers from Japan were met with warm hospitality and enthusiasm.
As we embark on our thirteenth year, CRN will aim for more than further growth. Our goal is development that closely follows the rapid changes in information technology in today's society as we fulfill our responsibility to provide information on Child Science to interested researchers and practitioners around the world and promote further research in this field. We at CRN hope that you will extend your continued support and valuable guidance in the coming year.
