We are pleased to announce the publication of a special issue of the CRN Annual Report, 2006, the Tenth Anniversary, a trilingual report in Japanese, English and Chinese. It was ten years ago that CRN was established after Dr. Noboru Kobayashi, CRN Director, thought of creating a Child Science Cyber Research Institute at the international conference in Bergen. Thanks to your support, CRN has grown enormously. Together, our Japanese, English and Chinese sites have a daily access of about 30,000. This is one step closer to making the twenty-first century "The Century of the Child," CRN's ultimate goal.
This issue, different from usual annual reports, features an interview "Children, Media, and Education" with Dr. Takemochi Ishii, CRN Honorary Director, Professor Emeritus, the University of Tokyo by Tomohiro Kawamura, CRN Researcher. It focuses on how media change children and how they can be applied in education.
Children, Media and Education Before broadband became available we only had access to pre-edited information. But this organized information wasn't very helpful without a good understanding of the background. Learning is all about giving children unorganized information, stimulating their curiosity and then letting them organize the information. The German word for "education" is eriziehen, which comes from the verb "draw out." Education will benefit if media can draw out children's potential and their latent thoughts. People change when they become curious.... (to be continued, the interview is also in CRN website)
"CRN History - A decade of growth" lists the events and symposia we have held over the years and provides a glimpse into the changing environment and problems that the children have faced in the past decade. The issue also introduces the context of our Chinese website launched in 2005, and our activities in China. We intend to promote the exchange of content among our three websites and post more articles related to children in Asia on our English site to make it an information hub on children and education in Asia. If you would like a copy, please contact us at Questions and Comments to CRN and include your name, mailing address, and the number of reports you would like.
