Lecture on Kodomogaku in Shanghai
Mariko Tokoro, CRN Staff
On October 13, Dr. Noboru Kobayashi, CRN Director, will present a lecture entitled "Biological Rhythm can Affect the Growth and Development of the Baby and Young Child" at a symposium in Shanghai.

Beginning with China's National Day on October 1, the month of October, with its wonderful weather, is considered to be best season of the year in China. This explains why so many international conferences and expositions are held during this month. The 2006 International Symposium on Early Development and Education of Newborns and Infants is one program of the International Exposition hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Population and Family Planning Commission and the Shanghai Contraceptives Supplies and Services Association, the government organization responsible matters related to the one-child policy. With experts from all over the world including Japan, the United States and Europe invited to discuss a wide range of topics dealing with early childhood development and education, the symposium promises to be a significant and exciting event.

Dr. Kobayashi's presentation will focus on the relation between the sleep rhythm and biological rhythm and development of the baby and young child from the perspective of human biology. Due to an imbalanced diet and lack of exercise, obesity among children is becoming a problem in the metropolitan areas of China. Furthermore, as the daily life of adults becomes more nighttime-oriented, children are also going to bed later. Establishing a daily life rhythm for babies and young children, however, is considered to be particularly important. Dr. Kobayashi's talk will address the mechanisms by which this daily life rhythm affects child development.

Since CRN's launch of its Chinese-language website in February 2005, exchange and communication with China has grown. The upcoming presentation will be Dr. Kobayashi's fourth lecture on Kodomogaku (Child Science) in China and the first to discuss these issues with scholars from a number of countries. Japan's policies to cope with the declining birthrate are the subject of much debate these days. What is China's population policy and what sort of children's problems does it face? The symposium will be a good opportunity to discuss these questions and gather much useful information to provide answers.
