The Environment

Y. S.
7th grade, Tamagawa Gakuen junior high school division

I would like to talk about the environment and how we can take action. I decided to research about the environment because one book attracted my attention. That book is "The Blue Peter Green Book". When I lived in England, there was an environment program for children called "Blue Peter". This book made us think how we could help our environment. Actually, I had kept the book for a few years in my bookshelf without reading until one day turned up. When I started reading it, I realized that I could help through many ways. On each page of this book, there is a page called an action box, which suggests how you could become a "Greener"--- environment friendly person. I was surprised to see how my family and I were cooperating to become the "Greener".

By doing this project, I would like to tell all the children in this generation that it is our task to protect the wild life and nature left on our planet. Dirty factories, polluted air, these are just a few things trying to destroy our earth. For example, the rain forests play a big role in the world's climate and atmosphere. The trees provide plenty of oxygen and supports thousands of species of animals, insects, and plants. However, a half of the rainforests in this world has already gone. Our earth is in danger and many threats. We must gain it back somehow. I think we can prevent the destruction by not buying tropical wood. What about the places we live? We can help by picking up litters set up or join a group to campaign for changes in our local environment, or recycling. I think each one of us can do something and such small something will lead to a big change in the world.

This is a challenge we all should take a role. We have to stop wasting too much energy or dangerous chemicals that may increase ozone halls or affect greenhouse effect. Once the environment is destroyed, it can never be replaced. We can't go back to the days when there was nothing but green; however we can make things turn to be better. We are the human being who are living in this world and have made the mess to this world, and who enjoy convenient life and take it granted for wasting things especially in the current century. So, it is our responsibility to clean it up.

If I had not met "The Blue Peter Green Book", I wouldn't have been thinking about the environment. I gained tremendous amount of knowledge and information through this book. I am very pleased about the book for giving me the opportunity to think. As I mentioned here, we are in a lot of threats and so is our planet. It is still not too late. So, we have to start what we can do now. I think we must make our voice heard because we, the children of today will be the people who are going to shape the future.
