Everything on the earth is interconnected

People are saying that the greenhouse effect will and is causing lots of trouble on the earth. If the earth's temperature rises even just one degree it's probably going to affect the whole natural cycle. Why? Because everything on the earth is interconnected. So today I'd like to talk about what the greenhouse effect is and how it's caused, the problems caused by it and what we should do to solve it.

The atmosphere if functioning correctly, traps the rays from the sun which are called INFRARED rays to keep the earth warm and habitable (like the glass in a greenhouse) but the problem is that the atmosphere today is becoming destroyed and keeps too much heat in the atmosphere which makes the earth's temperature rise. This is calledthe greenhouse effect.

And do you know what's going to happen if the earth's temperature goes up? Well, it's going to cause some serious trouble. If the temperature goes up, the polar ice caps are going to melt. If the ice caps melt, the sea level is going to rise. If the sea level rises, countries bellow the sea level will sink and there will be only a little land left. It will also cause more tropical storms, hurricanes, floods and draughts. And who knows what all the change in the weather is going to cause? It might cause lots of damages in the crops or it might cause the extinction of some rare species.

What can we do to stop the Greenhouse effect? To know that, we've got to know the cause of the Greenhouse effect. The main causes of the damage in the atmosphere are gases such as carbon dioxide, which comes from industries; car exhaust, nitrous oxide, which also car exhaust; burning coals and methane, which comes from rice paddies and garbage in landfills. So to say it concisely the main cause of the problem going on is US. If we didn't use cars and industries, if we didn't go looking for a more convenient life than necessary, there would have been no Greenhouse effect.

What can we do to stop the Greenhouse effect now that it's happening? We should of course remove the cause of the Greenhouse effect but we can't possibly remove ourselves so we should at the very least reduce the amount of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. How can we do that?

  1. Try to walk, cycle, carpool or use public transportation as much as possible.

  2. Reduce the depletion of trees and increase planting.

  3. Don't use nitrogen based fertilizers

  4. Don't use fossil fuel power plants for electricity

  5. Increase Earth Friendly industries.

  6. Reduce garbage and landfills and start recycling
At my house we recycle plastic bottles, cans, cardboard boxes and newspaper instead of throwing them out with the other garbage. I believe that even if the amount of recycling or using public transportation one can do is small, if everyone in the world does it, it will amount to something big. So each of us should try to do these small daily things as much as possible. And while we're doing these small things we should constantly keep on looking for a better way to live with nature in peace because this is our earth.

It is not enough to know about the environmental problems. We've got to act to solve it. And remember everything on the earth is interconnected. How you act and what you do does matter because that is what's going to make all the differences good or bad.

Lastly I found a poem in a book called "A Wind In The Door" by Madeleine L'engle that really matches what I wanted to say about interconnecting so I'll introduce it.

For want of a nail the shoe was lost
for want of a shoe the horse was lost
for want of a horse the rider was lost
for want of a rider the message was lost
for want of the message the bottle was lost
for want of the battle the war was lost
for want of the war the kingdom was lost
and all for the want of a horse shoe nail
