Everyone walked around in the room looking for a partner. When a person found someone else whose T-shirt would match nicely if tied together, they sewed their T-shirts together. Each pair then walked around the room with the connected T-shirts, looking for another pair of T-shirts that would match theirs. When two pairs decided to tie their T-shirts together, the four of them sewed the four T-shirts together on a sewing machine. This process was repeated until all the participants met one another and all the T-shirts were linked into one long band.

The concept behind this activity was that the old T-shirts the participants brought from their home countries represented the histories of the individuals. Sewing two T-shirts together represented a meeting of two individuals, and sewing four T-shirts together represented a meeting of four individuals.
