Objective of Child Research Net

Child Research Net (CRN) is a non-profit, Internet-based child research institute. We have designed CRN's English site to bring together people concerned about children and to offer a forum for innovative interdisciplinary discussion. Our vast network of professionals, researchers and educators around the world will bring you articles, reliable data and the latest research in English, mainly on Japanese children and youth that are not otherwise available.

CRN's aim is to exchange information and knowledge on the Internet with child experts and researchers worldwide and pursue the happiness of children from the biological and social perspectives of kodomogaku, Child Science, in its consideration of children.

CRN wants to open up the field of child study and expand perspectivs on how to communicate with the new generation. In addition, we hope that these discussions will help further the understanding of culture, youth and society. We invite all who are interested in the problem of children and youth today to participate in CRN.

Noboru Kobayashi, M.D.
Director, Child Research Net

Child Research Net (CRN) is a non-profit, Internet-based child research institute. Our research adopts an interdisciplinary point of view to all issues regarding children, one that we call kodomogaku in Japanese or Child Science. Finding that a single discipline alone is not sufficient to address the complexity of children and the problems they face, we pursue comprehensive and integrated research under the rubric of Child Science.

The study of children has tended to be fragmented, and serious confrontations ensue between biologists and educational professionals on the issue of heredity, for example, where both biological and humanistic approaches are possible. It is clear, however, that children are born as biological beings and grow up as social beings. The main objective of Child Science is to understand children through both approaches. Child Science focuses on the basic processes of growth and development in children, and applies these insights in studies of optimal formative environments, and problems of education and child behavior.

This interdisciplinary approach, by definition, aims to bring together experts from the specialized disciplines of conventional pedagogy, developmental psychology and pediatric health science, among others, as well as childcare professionals. Academic exchange of opinions is not, however, the end of Child Science: we aim to apply our findings in childcare and education to improve children's lives. CRN sponsors symposia, study sessions, and research projects on Child Science and makes available a wealth of information, data, and case studies on its website to all researchers who might be interested. And as a web-based institute, CRN naturally challenges the potential of technology today that enables high-speed communication and simultaneous participation to enhance its research network, database, and exchange.

We invite all who are interested in the problems of children and youth today to participate in CRN. We hope that, by working together, we will be able to improve the life and well-being of generations to come.
